Bakers: Explained

Remember that 4 layer wedding cake at your friend's wedding that left you amazed as to how beautiful it looked? That is a masterpiece created by a baker. Bakery can be called an art in itself as bakers need to have creativity along with baking skills to make appealing yet delicious cakes. By definition, bakers are people who "cook" or in other words bake food items such as bread, pastries, cakes and other bakery items. They can either work in small scale bakery shops or large scale factories. Bakers in small scale shops
usually bake custom request cakes, pastries or bread for birthdays. The toast you had this morning was actually baked in a factory using high-volume industrial equipment that bake breads and other items with larger quantity and shorter time. Factories usually bake breads and pastries to distribute to grocery stores or small convenience stores.

To be a baker, one does not require an advanced education. A diploma in culinary arts would do just fine. If you wish to be really successful in this field, you can go on to get a degree in culinary arts. Studying culinary arts does not only focus on baking but other forms of cooking as well. This can be advantageous as if you decide to divert from baking to becoming a chef, the doors would still be open for you. The most important thing you would need to become a baker would be enthusiasm and great interest in what you do. To add to your chances of becoming a successful baker, you can apply to work at a local bakery near your house. On-the-job training and experience can be even more beneficial than what you study in textbooks. By gaining experience you can learn how the industry work, how to bake using the proper methods and be inspired by your senior bakers' creativity. Education is still important as you would need to learn about nutrition, any regulations about food standards in your country and operation of different devices used in baking. If you aspire to build your own bakery, you would also need to learn business skills and accounting. You would also need to build contacts if you are planning to distribute your products.

A good baker would have the necessary skills along with great creativity to design and bake cakes. Customers may have many interesting requests as to how they would want their cake to look like. The baker must be able to visualize what the customer wants and be able to produce it with the resources he or she has. Some bakers choose to specialize in only one or two forms of baking such as baking cakes or pastries. By doing so, they can become more focused and better at what they do. Also by working in baking factories, one can have many career advancement opportunities such as becoming the production manager or head baker. If you are really passionate about becoming a baker, always remember to practice and experiment new things so that you can improve your current skills.
